Album Covers

These album covers have inspired and helped influence our choice of design for our album cover. We decided to look at albums covers from different genres.

The killers have their album cover in black and white, using the band in the picture they look as if they're floating which must be edited in Photoshop.

The bear in Kanye Wests album cover is used throughout his artwork. This is a simple picture with simple text and effects added on Photoshop.

In this album cover Eminem is seen lying down on a bed, looking up. The text is simple, this could be because Eminem is looking in the direction of it.

Devlin is seen standing on one side of the picture. This is a simple photography shot taken which makes him and the text stand out.

This Green Day album cover looks quite simple but alot of editing would have gone through it. The picture consits of a photo manipulated image and simple grungey text.

Costume - Casual Wear

We will also be using casual wear for our costumes.

As you can see Devlin is seen wearing a hoodie, Adidas trainers and tracksuit bottoms, this shows what type of music genre he is in.

Shot List

  • We will be using a variation of different shots in our music video, one of the first shots we will use is a mid shot of Alex(our performer) entering and leaving a bus.
  • We will also take close ups of him travelling on the bus to show he's moving place to place, and his emotions. He will be doing the same in Victoria train station and trams, using the same shots.
  • As he's moving from place to place it will make sense if he walks down roads and streets so we will take extreme long shots, long shots and mid shots oh him walking around town.
  • We will also needs shots of the stairs in the Arndale car park which Alex will run up, using close ups and mid shots of him getting to the top.
  • If possible we will take a long shot of him on the car park roof where the camera suggests he's about to jump off the building, and a close up of the ledge.

Eminem - When I'm Gone

The music video When I’m Gone by Eminem is of hip-hop genre. It is a narrative music video as the lyrics match the video, for example “"Daddy look what I made", Dad's gotta go catch a plane”, this is shown in the video.

Camerawork

There are a lot of closeups and midshots of Eminem, which helps develop a motif for him in order to get his name across and to get him well known. There is a closeup of the mic Eminem uses to rap about his life, it is blurred at first and then focused.

Editing

There are a few edits in the video for example there is an overlay of Eminem’s daughter Hayley swinging on top of a shot of him rapping. A shot of Eminem walking through a door dressed wearing a baseball cap and jacket fading into another shot of him in a suit walking onto a stage.

Mise-en-scene

The location used in the video is a hall where Eminem begins rapping on a podium, a stage, his house, and garden, all these places are mentioned in the song also. Eminem wears a baseball cap, and hoody, which matches the song genre. However when he’s on stage in the video, he is seen wearing a suit. The lighting in the music video is dim which makes it seem like a sad song. Dim lighting is used in most shots and strong lighting in others, for example Hayley is seen piling boxes in front of a door when a bright light shines through the doorway.

Goodwins Theory

The music video demonstrates genre characteristics as Eminem is seen wearing a baseball cap, hoody, and baseball jacket. This also makes it appeal to the audience. There are a lot of close ups of Eminem which helps him develop a motif, this gets him well known and his name across.

Storyboard Plan of Our Music Video

Production Treatment

The music video that we chose is Devlin - Runaway. The duration of this video is 3 minutes and 39 seconds. We decided that the audience would most likely be 15-24 year olds that have interest in hop hop and grime. We also thought that males would be the main audience. We thought that the technical aspects were similar to Kanye West’s video Homecoming, which has inspired us to do our video like his. Therefore we can use the camera work from both videos and the editing from Kanye Wests to make our video. We also think that this song choice will illustrate well and connect lyrics to visual. The name of the song Runaway gives the video away to the audience so they know what to expect (someone running away). Whilst planning our music video we took into consideration details such as performance, costumes, effects and key locations. We came to a decision to set our music video in Manchester, using quiet streets aswell as busy streets parks and buses for different parts in our video. We will use different locations within Manchester to give a different atmosphere and look to the video such as a train station which also gives illustraion to the video and tells a story. Other locations we chose was a member of the groups house, for a certian part in the video. The costumes chosen for our music video is casual wear, as the video/song Runaway is based on everyday situations and everyday people for example people will be wearing jeans and a tshirt. The effects and editing we have in mind for our music video include aspects from Kanye Wests video Homecoming. We decided this because the editing skills used in Homecoming will make our film look more intersting as our videos performance is very basic. For our performance we chose to match lyrics and visual therefore we will have a boy running away from home and the relationship with his girlfriend which will all be shown during the video. The boy is then running down various streets and locations at different parts of the day. Whilst planning our music video we estimated that the number of recording day needed will be about 3 or 4.

Kanye West - Homecoming

Kanye West – Homecoming Analysis

We chose the video Homecoming by Kanye West. The genre of the music video is hip-hop and the category is art/narrative. The use of monochrome is used throughout the whole video. Kanye West’s video involves a lot editing. These include the use of silhouette edits on top of camera work, this effect is used to focus on Kanye West to give motifs that emphasis the artist to make him more known to the public, the variety of locations of his hometown are also shown at the same time. Other effects used are slow motion, which is only used a number of times throughout the video and fast pace editing. Green screening is another effect used whilst playing the piano with fireworks as the background, they also used low key lighting give more even further effect.

In this video there is a variety of camera shots and movement, this includes low angle shots and mid shots to focus on Kanye West. There is a close up on the piano, which highlights the use of illustration, which means there is a relationship between music and visual. Inter-cuts show Kanye West performing then quickly change to him walking through the city. Tracking shots and pan shots are also used during the video to focus on Kanye West.

The lighting in the video is the same throughout although at certain parts the lighting is changed when there is a mid shot of Kanye West with the sun in the background and the light from the sun dominates him. The video also includes a decrease in lighting as the lyrics change to night, as does the lighting in the mid shot. This also shows illustration.

Within this video there is a number of locations that relate to the lyrics. The videos set in different places of Chicago. For example there is a medium close up of the DuSable museum of African-American history.

The video features a montage of Kanye West walking through many different areas of his hometown. We chose this music video because it inspired us to do ours this way about Manchester, this also means we can focus on camera shots of locations and buildings, like they do in this video, we can also use editing skills to make our video of high quality.

Goodwin’s Theory

Kanye West’s video refers to Goodwin’s theory as he demonstrates genre characteristics through the things they wear, actions and setting. There is also a relationship between lyrics and visual as well as music and visuals, as the lyrics are about his hometown and the music video is set in his hometown. Also there is a piano in the music that is included in the video. Kanye West is the main person featured in the video which means the focus is all on him, they use a lot of mid-shots on Kanye West to help develop motifs as well as including the buildings into the shot, although he is already a well known artist. In this video the reference to the notion of looking is mainly on Kanye West with the use of mirrors to show buildings around him in distorted way, they also use editing to show a silhouette of Kanye West whilst as well as showing locations.
